The story behind

God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, according to DoReSol

The song *God Put a Smile Upon Your Face* emerged from the band's need to have something with more drive for their live performances. The members of Coldplay sought to incorporate elements from artists like PJ Harvey and Muse, who conveyed greater energy. When recording it for the album A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), they felt something wasn’t quite right. It was during this search process, while bassist Guy Berryman was trying to record bass lines, that he and Chris Martin hit upon a rhythmic pattern that stayed on the same note instead of varying. This technical detail, though subtle, gave the track a "bounce" that made it flow more organically, transforming a somewhat mechanical feel into something more dynamic. Curiously, this piece nearly didn’t make it onto the album but ended up becoming one of the band’s favorites.

The song is defined by the interplay between acoustic and electric guitars. It begins with an intimate acoustic ballad atmosphere that gradually builds up to explode into a powerful electric guitar sound, accompanied by vocals. The percussion maintains a steady, accelerated rhythm, almost metronomic. The lyrics, in their chorus, include a cryptic reference to the divine, with lines like "Now when you work it out, I'm worse than you." Guitarist Jonny Buckland, in live performances, often played energetic riffs, while Chris Martin accompanied on acoustic guitar, giving the song a distinctive touch. It was officially released on July 1, 2003, as the final single from A Rush of Blood to the Head, with regional editions for Canada, Europe, and Australia, as well as promotional versions for the United Kingdom and the United States. The single’s cover art featured the participation of Guy Berryman and was directed by Sølve Sundsbø. As a B-side, it included the song Murder.
