The story behind
When you find yourself listening to *Amsterdam*, it's interesting to know that this piece, the eleventh and closing track of the album A Rush of Blood to the Head, was born from a direct experience in the city that gives it its name. The band was in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and the atmosphere of that place inspired the creation of the lyrics. Unlike other tracks, this song was not released as a promotional single, but remained an integral part of the album, offering a particular atmosphere at the end of the listening experience. Its duration, just over five minutes, allows the melody to develop and convey that evocative feeling.
The composition of *Amsterdam* was gestated during a period of intense activity for Coldplay. It was written between 2000 and 2001, during the tour to present their first work, Parachutes. In fact, the public was able to hear it live on three occasions during that same tour, the first time being at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on August 7, 2001. Subsequently, it became part of the repertoire of the A Rush of Blood to the Head Tour and was recorded in the audiovisual material Live 2003. The album to which it belongs, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was produced by the band itself along with Ken Nelson, and marked an evolution in their sound, giving greater prominence to the electric guitar and piano, compared to their debut. This album had a significant impact, reaching number one in twelve countries and selling millions of copies worldwide. The recording credits for *Amsterdam* include Ken Nelson and Rik Simpson as engineers, while the mixing was handled by Coldplay, Ken Nelson, and Mark Phythian, with production shared between the band and Ken Nelson.
