The story behind
Mal castigo, according to DoReSol
In Mal castigo, Aterciopelados unleashes raw energy that connects with the roots of punk, but filtered through their own sensibility. The song, with its 3 minutes and 41 seconds of duration, became one of the first tracks to resonate strongly in the Colombian music scene, foreshadowing the impact the band would have across all of Latin America. It is an example of how they knew how to blend sounds to create something distinctive from the very beginning.
This track is part of Con el corazón en la mano, the debut album by Aterciopelados, recorded and mixed at Studio Master Producciones in Bogotá during the spring of 1993. The production was led by Juan Antonio Castillo, while Richard Blair handled the mixing. The album, released on vinyl, cassette, and CD, sold around 50,000 copies—a considerable figure for a Colombian artist at the time—and laid the groundwork for Aterciopelados to establish themselves as one of the most recognized rock groups in the region.
