The story behind

American Idiot, according to DoReSol

The song American Idiot by Green Day kicks off with an energy that immediately grabs you, a repeating guitar riff that immerses you in the piece's atmosphere. It's a track born from Billie Joe Armstrong's frustration at seeing how the media, especially the coverage of the Iraq War, seemed to turn news into a spectacle. He recalled journalists who appeared to be living the war alongside soldiers, and felt that journalism had crossed over into reality television, mixing violent images with advertising. The final spark to compose it came from hearing a Lynyrd Skynyrd song that exalted the pride of being a "redneck," something that to Armstrong seemed the exact opposite of what he stood for. The lyrics, moreover, play with strong contrasts, such as the juxtaposition of "faggot" and "America," seeking to give voice to those who feel marginalized.

The recording of this track, released in 2004, took place in March of that year. Green Day, along with Rob Cavallo, handled the production. Musically, it's classified within punk rock and pop-punk, with a structure that combines I-IV-♭VII-IV-I-♭VII chords and a IV-I-V-I progression in the chorus and solo. Armstrong used a 1956 Gibson Les Paul Junior for the rhythm and a reissued 1959 Les Paul for the double guitar solo. Curiously, he initially hesitated to record a solo, but he wanted the album to evoke that feeling of being 15 years old and playing in front of the mirror. The song's structure and rhythm were also influenced by US Forces by Midnight Oil. As a single, American Idiot reached number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the first time Green Day appeared on that chart. While it didn't benefit from the later inclusion of digital downloads in the count, it did become their first Top 5 single in the UK, reaching number 3, and debuted at number 1 in Canada. By July 2010, it had sold over 1.3 million copies.
