The piece Jesus of Suburbia, with its five interconnected acts, presents itself as an expansive narrative that goes beyond a simple song. With a duration of 9 minutes and 8 seconds, this work by Green Day unfolds as a kind of "punk rock opera," as described by the members themselves. The central story revolves around a young working-class anti-hero, "Jesus of Suburbia," whose journey reflects the disillusionment and discontent of a generation marked by significant events such as September 11th and the Iraq War. This ambitious composition was conceived and recorded as part of the album American Idiot, a project that sought to capture precisely that feeling of the era.

The recording of American Idiot, and by extension Jesus of Suburbia, took place between 2003 and 2004 in studios located in Oakland and Hollywood, both in California. The album was produced by Rob Cavallo in close collaboration with the band. To shape this sound, Green Day, comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, had the support of several recording engineers, including Joe Brown, Greg Burns, Chris Dugan, Jimmy Hoyson, Doug McKean, Reto Peter, and Brian Vibberts. The mixing task fell to Dmitar Krnjaic and Chris Lord-Alge, who helped consolidate the album's sonic proposal, released through Reprise Records.
