The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins are no ordinary band: they are a real-time experiment where guitars overflow, lyrics cut like knives, and rhythms shift direction as if the ground were moving beneath your feet. Since their first rehearsals in Chicago back in 1988, Billy Corgan, James Iha, D’arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin crafted a sound unlike anything else: blending the weight of heavy metal with the delicacy of shoegaze, the chaos of grunge with the elegance of progressive rock. Corgan, obsessed with building layers of sound, recorded riffs that intertwined like vines, while Chamberlin struck the drums with a precision almost jazz-like.

They didn’t aim to sound like anyone else; they wanted each song to breathe on its own, even if that meant recording Gish (1991) under precarious conditions, with borrowed equipment and a budget barely enough for coffee.
