The story behind
This song was born as a forgotten draft in the demo drawer. Billy Corgan wrote it during the Gish sessions in 1991, but it remained on hold until two years later, when it was rescued for the B-side of Today in the UK. The track has that mix of melancholy and urgency that defines the early The Smashing Pumpkins: guitars that tangle like loose wires and lyrics that seem written at three in the morning in a Chicago hotel. Its length, 5:29, is no coincidence: it's just the right time for the main riff to unfold without haste, like a dream that drags on too long.
What's curious is that Obscured barely exists in official releases. Corgan swore he would never re-record old songs after this episode, yet here it is, like a ghost from the past that slipped into the future. The album Siamese Dream (1993) already had four singles under its belt when this track appeared as a companion to Today, but over time it became a fan favorite for its dense atmosphere and raw sound. Produced by Butch Vig amid creative tensions, the song captures that raw energy that would later define the band: guitars layered to the limit, drums that pulse like a racing heart, and Corgan's voice oscillating between a whisper and a scream.
