The story behind

This song isn’t just another track in The Smashing Pumpkins’ catalog: it’s the sound of a band unraveling and rebuilding itself in the studio. Recorded amid screams and broken headphones, Hello Kitty Kat (As Kitty Kat) floats over a guitar loop that seems to breathe in 7/8, as if time itself had turned irregular. It’s not a riff that repeats: it’s an obsession that tangles, with layers piling up until they form a wall of melodic distortion. Billy Corgan’s voice doesn’t sing over it—it challenges it, as if every syllable had to carve its way through the noise. The song lasts 4:26, but in that brief space, there’s more tension than in many double-album tracks.

It emerged amid the chaos of the Siamese Dream sessions, when Corgan recorded until exhaustion while the rest of the band came and went as best they could. The album ended up being a six-million-copy monster, certified 4× Platinum, but Hello Kitty Kat (As Kitty Kat) remained a dark fragment among the commercial hits. It wasn’t a single, had no video, and didn’t even appear on the tracklist in some editions. Yet those who heard it at the time remembered it as the moment the band allowed itself to be stranger than ever. Corgan wrote it in Chicago, in a room that smelled of burnt coffee and loose wires, while the rest of the band tried to keep up. But there, in that poorly ventilated room, something was born that sounded like no one else.
