More about Bo Diddley
Biography
If you had to pick three defining moments, the first is that rhythm that now echoes everywhere, from hip-hop to stadium anthems. The second is his rectangular guitar, an instrument he designed so the sound wouldn’t get lost onstage. And the third is his direct influence on bands like The Clash or George Thorogood, who copied his attitude more than his technique. He recorded over 20 albums, but the ones that best capture his essence are Bo Diddley (1958), where the beat is already law, Have Guitar Will Travel (1960) with its razor-sharp riffs, and The Originator (1966), where blues merges with garage rock. In 1987 he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2003 the Blues Hall of Fame, and in 2017 the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame—but his legacy wasn’t about collecting accolades. It was about leaving a mark that still rings out every time someone hits a snare with that rhythm.
