Blur

Blur is a British rock music group that originated in London in 1988. The band consists of vocalist Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree. Their first album, Leisure (1991), incorporated elements of madchester and shoegazing. They subsequently adopted a new style influenced by British pop bands such as The Kinks, The Beatles and XTC, which resulted in the albums Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995). These works contributed to the popularisation of britpop and brought them great recognition in the United Kingdom, especially following a media rivalry with Oasis in 1995, known as the «Battle of Britpop».

The fifth album, titled Blur (1997), marked another change of style, this time influenced by the lo-fi sound of American indie rock bands, and became their third album to reach number one on the UK charts. The single «Song 2» gave them their first significant success in the United States. Their next work, 13 (1999), explored electronic music and gospel, with more personal lyrics from Albarn, who addressed his struggle with heroin addiction and his break-up with Justine Frischmann, singer of Elastica. The seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued with electronic experimentation and reflected Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music, with a more minimalist approach to guitar. During the early recording sessions for Think Tank, Coxon left the band, and Blur split for several years after the album tour ended, while its members pursued other projects.

Biography

In 2009, Blur reunited with Coxon and embarked on a reunion tour of Europe. In the following years, they released several singles and compilations, as well as undertaking international tours. In 2012, they were awarded a Brit Award for their Outstanding Contribution to Music. Their eighth album, The Magic Whip (2015), was the sixth consecutive to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart. After the The Magic Whip Tour, the band went on hiatus, but in 2023 they reunited to perform several live shows and released their ninth studio album, The Ballad of Darren.

Damon Albarn enrolled in a part-time music course at Goldsmiths College in London in 1988, with the aim of gaining access to the student union bar. Blur was formed in December 1988 when Alex James joined Albarn's band, Circus, and they changed their name to Seymour, inspired by J. D. Salinger's book Seymour: An Introduction. Already in the band were drummer Dave Rowntree, who had joined in October, and guitarist Graham Coxon, Albarn's childhood friend from Essex, who was studying at Goldsmiths College alongside Albarn and James. The group made their live debut in mid-1989 at the goods shed of the East Anglian Railway Museum in Chappel & Wakes Colne. In November, Andy Ross, a representative of Food Records, attended a Seymour performance and convinced the group to work with his label. However, Ross and Food were not satisfied with the band's name, considering it uncommercial. Food proposed a list of alternative names, from which the group chose Blur. They ultimately signed with the label in March 1990. From March to July 1990, the band toured Great Britain, writing new songs.
