The story behind
There's something about *On Your Own* that makes it feel like a turning point, a song that Blur recorded at a moment of change. Although it was released in 1997, associated with the album of the same name from that year, Damon Albarn, the band's frontman, has even referred to it as one of the first ideas that resonated with the Gorillaz project. The recording of the single's B-sides, for example, took place in John Peel's home studio, known as Peel Acres, and they were broadcast by BBC Radio 1 in May 1997. A special edition on clear vinyl included the mention "includes POPSCENE", a reference to a track that was not included in the British version of Modern Life Is Rubbish and which became coveted until its appearance on Midlife: A Beginner's Guide to Blur. The version of *On Your Own* that appears on the compilation Bustin' + Dronin', released only in Japan, even merges with *Song 2* and features three distinct interpretations of the track.
The music of *On Your Own* is the joint work of Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree, while the lyrics bear Albarn's exclusive signature. The music video, directed by Sophie Muller, was filmed in Barcelona, near the Torre de Agua de Besós, in what was then an industrial area. The album Blur, from which this single is taken, marked a stylistic shift for the English band. Following the critical reception of their previous work, The Great Escape, and with internal tensions growing, Graham Coxon suggested a change. Influenced by American independent rock bands like Pavement, they recorded the album in London and Reykjavík, Iceland. Drummer Dave Rowntree described the album's sound as more aggressive and emotional.
