The story behind
Beetlebum, according to DoReSol
When Damon Albarn wrote Beetlebum, he was exploring complex emotional terrain, a feeling he himself described as both "numb" and "sensual". The song, released on January 16, 1997, became the first single from Blur's fifth album, which shared the same name. Despite doubts about its commercial potential, Beetlebum surprised by reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart, marking the second time Blur had achieved that position. The lyrics, it is believed, were inspired by Albarn's experiences with heroin and his then-relationship with Justine Frischmann of Elastica. The title itself, Beetlebum, seems to allude to the phrase "chasing the beetle", a slang term for inhaling heated heroin smoke. Interestingly, the name "Beetlebaum" appears in a 1948 Spike Jones parody, and "Beadlebum" was a nickname used by radio presenter Jeremy Beadle in the late 1970s. Producer Stephen Street, upon hearing Albarn's voice in the recording, felt deep emotion, considering it a special moment for the band.
The musical structure of Beetlebum, with its influences reminiscent of The Beatles, was a stylistic shift for Blur, moving away from their earlier sound. This led to expectations that it would not be a commercial success. However, the single sold 120,000 copies in its first week in the UK and charted within the top ten in several European countries, in addition to reaching number 13 on the Canadian alternative chart. Bassist Alex James commented that Beetlebum reflected a maturity in Blur's songwriting, allowing them to perform their songs with greater feeling. The song has also been included in several of the band's compilations and was remixed by Moby for the album Bustin' + Dronin'. The album Blur, released on February 10, 1997, marked a turning point for the band, influenced by American indie rock after a period of internal tension and media criticism. The recording took place in both London and Reykjavik, Iceland, resulting in a sound described as more aggressive and emotional.
