Películas

When La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros released Películas in 1977, they had already taken a step forward from their first work the previous year. This second album, which would also be their last, feels more cohesive, as if the musical ideas had found each other and intertwined with greater purpose. The cover art, by Juan Oreste Gatti, already gives us a hint of the atmosphere that pervades it: something more elaborate and conceptual. A deeper sonic search is noticeable, with arrangements that enrich the compositions, exploring textures ranging from the most intricate to moments of great impact.

About the album

Películas, according to DoReSol

In Películas, the band delves into a sound that draws from progressive and symphonic rock, with a structure reminiscent of how bands like Yes conceived their songs as movements of a larger work. We hear this in the rhythmic and instrumental variety that runs through the album. There are tracks that evoke spatial atmospheres, such as ¿Qué se puede hacer, salvo ver películas?, which stands out for its use of congas and an air that could recall French music of the era. On the other hand, Hipercandombe brings a candombe with a very particular electric energy, while No te dejes desanimar touches on more pop roots, but with string arrangements that give it a special dimension. The theme of cinema, which gives the album its title, permeates the lyrics, many of which can be interpreted as metaphors for the difficult circumstances being experienced in Argentina in those years.

The band presented itself with a solid lineup for this album: Charly García on keyboards and guitars, Oscar Moro on drums, Gustavo Bazterrica on guitars, José Luis Fernández on bass, and Carlos Cutaia on keyboards. The official presentation was at the Teatro Coliseo, but the big event took place at the Luna Park, before a large audience, where they offered a memorable show in July 1977. It is interesting to note that an unreleased song, Caras y Estatuas, written by José Luis Fernández, was left off the album but was played live in 1977.
