The story behind

Hipercandombe is that unexpected crossover where Argentine rock collides with candombe and drags it into a labyrinth of rhythms that never warn when they’ll shift. It’s not just another track on an album: it’s a journey where guitars tangle with percussion from another tradition, yet here they sound like the future. The song breathes between the symphonic and the Afro-Rioplatense, as if every instrument is gauging its strength before launching into attack. What’s most striking isn’t the blend itself, but how it manages to sound urgent without losing a shred of precision. The lyrics, meanwhile, play a dual game: on one hand, that atmosphere of distrust and isolation enveloping the protagonist, and on the other, the faint light of a memory keeping him afloat. There’s a tension between what hurts and what soothes, between the oppressive present and the distance that calms. It’s not a song that explains; it drags the listener into feeling that unresolved contradiction. Recorded at Ion Studios in 1977, with Charly García at the keyboards and guitars, and Oscar Moro driving the pulse on drums, the track holds its own in that balance between experimental and catchy. Clocking in at 4:33, it never lets up, yet never overstays its welcome: every note feels necessary. In 2007, Rolling Stone Argentina recalled it by including Películas in its list of the 100 best albums of national rock, but its true merit lies in how it still sounds fresh decades later.
