The story behind
La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros had a sound that moved between the experimental and the narrative, but in El vendedor de las muñecas de plástico the band found a strange balance: the song progresses with a rhythm that seems to escape traditional measures, as if time stretched to make room for every detail. The piano and drums intertwine with a precision that doesn’t seek solemnity, but rather to tell a story where the everyday and the dreamlike blend without warning. It’s not a track that invites dancing, nor one to stay still: it forces you to follow each note as if it were a dialogue between the seller and those dolls that suddenly come to life in your imagination.
Recorded at Ion Studios in Argentina in 1977, the song emerged at a time when the band had already defined its style: less bound by the conventions of progressive rock and more open to experimenting with textures. The album Películas, where it was included, was released that same year under the Talent Microfón label, and although today it’s remembered for its sonic ambition, at the time it went unnoticed by the general public. Curiously, decades later, Rolling Stone Argentina included it among the 100 best of national rock, giving it a place it never had in its time. With an exact duration of 4:46, the song doesn’t aim to be long, but precise: every instrument has its moment to shine without overpowering the whole.
