Luzbelito

When one approaches Luzbelito, the eighth studio album by Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, released in July 1996, one encounters a work that invites reflection from its very conception. The album unfolds as a sonic and lyrical concept that, through the figure of a supposed son of the devil, Luzbelito, explores the dualities and gray areas of human beliefs and behaviors. Musically, the album weaves an atmosphere that can be somber and oppressive at times, but also knows how to open up to more festive passages, creating an interesting contrast. A peculiarity of Luzbelito is that it was Los Redondos' first work to be presented without the traditional plastic CD case; instead, a detailed illustrated mini-book was chosen, once again with art by Rocambole, who collaborated on all the band's albums except one. The production of this album demanded more time and the use of several studios, including Be Bop in São Paulo, New River in Fort Lauderdale, and El Pie in Buenos Aires.

About the album

Luzbelito, according to DoReSol

Within the tracklist, some songs resonate with particular strength. «Mariposa Pontiac - Rock del país», for example, was recognized as one of the most outstanding compositions of Argentine rock. Curiously, this and «Blues de la libertad» were not created specifically for Luzbelito; in fact, their origin dates back to a period before the release of the album Gulp!, which explains why their style does not align completely with the rest of the album. The initial idea was for Luzbelito to contain only completely new material, but Indio Solari, in his free moments, generated so many compositions that they ended up displacing almost the entire original project, leaving only these two pieces as unreleased. It is interesting to note that, 25 years later, in 2021, Indio Solari shared on his YouTube channel two other songs that were also recorded and mastered for Luzbelito but were left out: «Rock de las abejas» and «Quema el celo». These, along with «Blues de la libertad» and «Mariposa Pontiac - Rock del país», were recorded in Brazil with the Metaleira Mantequeira orchestra.

The presentation of Luzbelito was also marked by an incident. During the presentation tour, in August 1997, a concert scheduled in Olavarría was suspended by decision of the then mayor, Helios Eseverri, who cited fear of possible violent overflows by the audience. The recital finally took place in the nearby town of Tandil, on October 4 of the same year. Regarding its reception, Argentina's Rolling Stone magazine included Luzbelito at number 88 on its list of the 100 best national rock albums.
