A história por trás
Tears for Fears escreveu Year of the Knife em 1989, dentro de seu álbum The Seeds of Love. A música nasceu no meio de um processo de gravação complicado. A banda começou a trabalhar em 1986, mas não estavam satisfeitos com o resultado. Tiveram que começar do zero, e no final assumiram o próprio projeto. A ideia era fazer algo mais orgânico, longe da música programada que haviam feito antes. Buscavam algo mais quente, mais real. A música foi escrita em junho de 1987, em um momento em que o Reino Unido estava sob o governo de Margaret Thatcher. Na letra reflete-se essa tensão política. A banda buscava um som mais vivo, e para isso chamaram uma pianista e cantora chamada Oleta Adams. Ela se juntou à gravação e contribuiu com uma sensação de soul e calor que marcou a diferença. A música acabou sendo parte do álbum que os levou ao nível internacional.
