La storia dietro
Tears for Fears scrisse Year of the Knife nel 1989, all'interno del suo album The Seeds of Love. La canzone nacque durante un processo di registrazione complesso. La band cominciò a lavorare nel 1986, ma non erano soddisfatti del risultato. Dovettero ripartire da zero e alla fine si presero in carico il loro stesso progetto. L'idea era fare qualcosa di più organico, lontano dalla musica programmata che avevano fatto prima. Cercavano qualcosa di più caldo, più reale. La canzone fu scritta nel giugno 1987, in un momento in cui il Regno Unito era sotto il governo di Margaret Thatcher. Nel testo si riflette quella tensione politica. La band cercava un suono più vivace, e per questo chiamarono una pianista e cantante chiamata Oleta Adams.
