La historia detrás
Tears for Fears escribió Year of the Knife en 1989, dentro de su álbum The Seeds of Love. La canción nació en medio de un proceso de grabación complicado. La banda empezó a trabajar en 1986, pero no estaban contentos con el resultado. Tuvieron que empezar de nuevo, y al final se pusieron a cargo de su propio proyecto. La idea era hacer algo más orgánico, lejos de la música programada que habían hecho antes. Buscaban algo más cálido, más real. La canción se escribió en junio de 1987, en un momento en que el Reino Unido estaba bajo el gobierno de Margaret Thatcher. En la letra se refleja esa tensión política. La banda buscaba un sonido más vivo, y para eso llamaron a una pianista y cantante llamada Oleta Adams. Ella se unió a la grabación y aportó una sensación de soul y calidez que marcó la diferencia. La canción terminó siendo parte del álbum que los catapultó a un nivel internacional.
