Tears for Fears scrisse "Shout" nel 1984, con Roland Orzabal e Ian Stanley. La canzone fu registrata nello studio mentre lavoravano ad un altro brano, "Mothers Talk". L'idea nacque da un'espressione ripetitiva, come un mantra, che Roland suonava nel suo studio con un sintetizzatore e una batteria. Fu un processo informale, quasi improvvisato, e finì per diventare una delle più importanti della band. La canzone ha un suono potente, con accordi forti, percussioni e soli di basso. Include anche un lungo solo di chitarra, qualcosa di inedito per loro. La testo non è su un grido primordiale, ma un invito a pensare prima di agire. Fu un successo nel 1985, raggiunse la numero uno negli Stati Uniti e il quarto posto nel Regno Unito. Oggi rimane ancora una delle più remixate della loro discografia.
