Tears for Fears scrisse Everybody Wants to Rule the World nel 1984, prima che l'album Songs from the Big Chair uscisse nel 1985. La canzone fu registrata in un studio in Inghilterra e divenne il terzo singolo dell'album. Arrivò al numero uno negli Stati Uniti nel 1985, qualcosa che il gruppo non aveva mai fatto prima.
