Tears for Fears escribió “Shout” en 1984, con Roland Orzabal y Ian Stanley. La canción se grabó en el estudio mientras trabajaban en otro tema, “Mothers Talk”. La idea surgió de un refrán repetitivo, como un mantra, que Roland tocaba en su cuarto con un sintetizador y una batería. Fue un proceso informal, casi improvisado, y terminó siendo una de las más importantes de la banda. La canción tiene un sonido fuerte, con acordes potentes, percusión y solos de bajo. También incluye un largo solo de guitarra, algo inédito para ellos. La letra no es sobre el grito primal, sino un llamado a pensar antes de actuar. Fue un hit en 1985, llegó al número uno en EE.UU. y al cuarto lugar en el Reino Unido. Hoy sigue siendo una de las más remezcladas de su discografía.
