La storia dietro
Tears for Fears registrò Mad World nel 1982, come secondo singolo del loro primo album, The Hurting. La canzone uscì in radio nel settembre di quell'anno, e fu quella che aprì loro le porte. La scrisse Roland Orzabal, quando aveva 19 anni, su chitarra acustica, ispirato lo stile new wave dei Duran Duran. All'inizio non trovò il vocalist, fino a quando gli suggerì Curt Smith, e improvvisamente suonò bene. La registrarono con produttori che in seguito lavorarono con altri artisti, e la canzone divenne il singolo principale. Il video la mostrò come una storia di qualcuno che guarda da una finestra, mentre l'altro balla in modo strano. Fu il primo video del gruppo. Anni dopo, altri artisti la interpretarono, come Gary Jules o KJ Apa, ma la versione originale rimane comunque la più conosciuta.
