The story behind

Zoraide, according to DoReSol

Zoraide is the song that breaks the mold on the first album by Ultraje a Rigor. Recorded at the Nas Nuvens studio in Rio de Janeiro, it sounds unlike anything else being played at the time: the opening riff repeats with a cadence that defies traditional time signatures, as if time itself were stretching without warning. The lyrics, short and direct, tell a story that feels plucked from an ordinary day in the city, but with an ironic twist that was already the band’s trademark. It doesn’t sound like a rehearsal — it sounds like something captured quickly, without filters, as if time were running out.

The album Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia was released in 1985 and was the first by Ultraje a Rigor. The title, according to producer Pena Schmidt, was meant as a provocation from São Paulo’s bands toward those in Rio: a new generation arriving to challenge the pioneers of Brazilian rock. Zoraide isn’t the most famous track on the record, but it’s one of the best at capturing that spirit: fresh, unpretentious, and with a humor that asks for no permission. Guitarist Carlo "Carlinhos" Bartolini played on these sessions, though he left before the next LP, Sexo!!, was recorded in 1987. The album sold better than expected — going platinum in Brazil — and Zoraide remains a curious detail within an already historic record.
