The story behind
Spiel mit mir, according to DoReSol
The song "Spiel mit mir," which translates to "Play with Me," is the seventh track on the album *Sehnsucht* by the German band Rammstein. Its lyrics have sparked various interpretations, often viewed from the perspective of an older brother addressing a younger one, referred to as “Brüderlein.” Some interpretations suggest an incestuous relationship, in which the older brother proposes a “game” to help the younger one fall asleep. Other interpretations explore the dynamics of dysfunctional or toxic family relationships more broadly. The song is 4 minutes and 47 seconds long.
This track is part of *Sehnsucht*, Rammstein’s second studio album, released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide on August 25 of that same year under the Motor Music Records label. The album stood out for its distinctive cover art, designed by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. The images show the faces of the band members with what appear to be instruments of torture. However, these are actually original surgical instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon. The back cover features an image of a white-sand beach. *Sehnsucht* had a significant impact in Europe, reaching number one in Germany. The album was produced by Bobo, Jacob Hellner, and Rammstein themselves, with mixing by Ronald Prent.
Rammstein, originally from Berlin, Germany, formed in 1994 and is known for its industrial metal style, playing a key role in the Neue Deutsche Härte scene alongside bands such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps. Since its inception, the band’s lineup has remained unchanged, with Till Lindemann on lead vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars and backing vocals, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums and electronic percussion, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. Their music, mostly in German, also includes songs in other languages. By 2009, they had sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Their live performances are renowned for their use of pyrotechnics and a strong sense of theatricality.
