The story behind

Tier, according to DoReSol

Rammstein’s song “Tier,” which means “Animal” in German, is the third track on the album *Sehnsucht* and delves into complex themes. Lead singer Till Lindemann explained that the song seeks to draw a line between natural instinct and human reason. While animals mate without the concept of incest, human beings have the capacity for conscious thought. If a father feels desire for his own daughter—whom he himself has fathered—this ceases to be natural and becomes something sick. The song, which runs 3:48, encapsulates this clash between the urgency of instinct and the capacity for discernment, culminating in the idea that, in certain acts, “you’re just an animal.” This album, *Sehnsucht*, released in 1997, is also notable for its distinctive cover art. The cover unfolds to reveal photographs of the faces of the Rammstein members, altered with what appear to be instruments of torture. These images, created by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, actually feature original surgical instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon.

Sehnsucht was released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide on August 25 of that same year, under the Motor Music Records label. The album achieved notable success in Europe, reaching number one in Germany. The mixing of *Tier* was handled by Ronald Prent, while the production was a collaborative effort between Bobo, Jacob Hellner, and the band Rammstein itself. The band Rammstein, originally from Berlin, Germany, formed in 1994 and has remained unchanged ever since, with Till Lindemann on lead vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. The band is a leading figure in industrial metal and one of the most prominent acts in the Neue Deutsche Härte scene, alongside groups such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps. Their songs, predominantly in German, have also incorporated other languages, and their live performances are known for the intensity of their pyrotechnics and stage production. Rammstein’s entire catalog is managed by Universal Music Group.
