The story behind

Bestrafe mich, according to DoReSol

"Bestrafe mich," the fourth track on Rammstein's album *Sehnsucht*, invites listeners to explore an intense, almost submissive relationship between a human being and a divine figure. The lyrics, which play with imagery evoking sadomasochism, construct a unique dialogue that unfolds over the song’s three minutes and thirty-nine seconds.

This song is part of *Sehnsucht*, the band’s second studio album, released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide a few days later, on August 25, under the Motor Music Records label. The album not only reached number one in Germany but also made a significant impact across Europe. Its visual identity is particularly striking: the cover art, created by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, features the faces of Rammstein’s members altered with what appear to be instruments of torture. However, these are actual surgical instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon. Sehnsucht was produced by Bobo, Jacob Hellner, and the band itself, with Ronald Prent handling the mixing.

Rammstein, originally from Berlin, Germany, formed in 1994 and has maintained its original lineup ever since, with Till Lindemann on lead vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. The band is one of the most renowned exponents of industrial metal and is considered a fundamental part of the Neue Deutsche Härte scene, alongside groups such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps. Their music, mostly in German, has achieved widespread popularity, with over 15 million albums sold as of 2009, and their concerts are famous for their spectacular stage shows, featuring a distinctive use of pyrotechnics and theatricality that has earned them awards in various countries, including the United States of America. Their catalog is released by Universal Music Group. The band’s name, with an extra “m,” is inspired by the Ramstein air disaster.
