The story behind
Sehnsucht, according to DoReSol
The word “Sehnsucht,” which serves as the title of this Rammstein song, translates from German as “longing” or “desire.” It is the opening track on their second album, also titled *Sehnsucht*, and even from the lyrics alone, one can sense a desire to provoke. Throughout the song, there are references with double meanings, such as the line “Der Finger rutscht nach Mexiko doch er versinkt im Ozean,” which evokes suggestive imagery. The song is four minutes and four seconds long.
The album *Sehnsucht* was released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide on August 25, 1997, under the Motor Music Records label. Its cover art is particularly distinctive: a fold-out cover that reveals photographs of the band members’ faces, altered to include what appear to be instruments of torture. These images, created by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, actually feature genuine surgical instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon. The back of the album features an image of a white-sand beach. The album had a significant impact in Europe, reaching number one in Germany. It was mixed by Ronald Prent and produced by Bobo, Jacob Hellner, and the band Rammstein itself.
Rammstein, an industrial metal band from Berlin, Germany, formed in 1994 and has maintained its original lineup ever since, with Till Lindemann on vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers on guitars, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel on bass, Christoph “Doom” Schneider on drums, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz on keyboards. They are considered a key part of the Neue Deutsche Härte scene, alongside other bands such as Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and Die Krupps, and have established themselves as the most successful group in this genre, achieving global recognition. Although their lyrics are usually in German, they have also incorporated other languages such as English, Spanish, French, and Russian. By 2009, they had sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Their live performances are known for their use of pyrotechnics and a strong theatrical element. Rammstein’s entire catalog is released by Universal Music Group. The band’s name refers to the Ramstein air disaster, with an extra “m” that turns it into “ramstone.”
