The story behind
Smells Like Teen Spirit is a song by the American rock band Nirvana. It serves as the opening track and lead single of Nevermind (1991), the group's second album, distributed through DGC Records. The unexpected success of the song led the album to top multiple album charts in early 1992, a moment that is often cited as the entry of grunge into the mainstream circuit. It was Nirvana's greatest commercial achievement on the international music charts during 1991 and 1992, reaching number one in Belgium, France, New Zealand, and Spain. Critics received it favorably and described it as an «anthem for apathetic kids» of Generation X. Despite the fact that Nirvana felt uncomfortable with the massive exposure the song brought them, both listeners and critics continue to rank «Smells Like Teen Spirit» among the greatest songs of all time. The music video presents the concept of a pep rally at a high school that ends in chaos and riots. Its inspiration came from the film Over the Edge (1979), directed by Jonathan Kaplan, and from the Ramones' Rock 'n' Roll High School. The video won two awards at the MTV Video Music Awards and had a constant presence in the channel's programming throughout the nineties. Later, Amy Finnerty, a former member of MTV's programming department, stated that the video «changed the entire look of MTV» by giving the channel «a whole new generation to sell to». In the year 2000, the Guinness World Records recognized «Smells Like Teen Spirit» as the «most played video» on MTV Europe. The song is part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of songs that helped shape rock and roll. In 2001, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) placed it at number 80 on its Songs of the Century list. The following year, in 2002, NME ranked it second on its list of «100 Greatest Singles of All Time», while Kerrang! placed it at number one on its own list of the «100 Greatest Singles of All Time». In 2021, Rolling Stone placed it fifth on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2017, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The composition emerged among several songs written after Nirvana's first recording sessions with producer Butch Vig in 1990. Singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain began writing it a few weeks before entering the studio to record Nevermind in 1991, with the stated intention of creating something in the style of the Pixies, a band he admired. When Cobain presented it to the rest of the group, the song featured only the main guitar riff and the vocal melody of the chorus. Cobain himself described it as a «cliché», comparable to some Boston track or to Richard Berry's «Louie Louie». Bassist Krist Novoselic dismissed it as «ridiculous»; faced with this, Cobain insisted that the band play it for an hour and a half. Over time, Novoselic began playing it at a slower tempo, which led drummer Dave Grohl to develop the drum line, based on disco artists such as The Gap Band. This is why it is the only song on Nevermind that credits all three members as co-authors. The title originates from a phrase that Cobain's friend Kathleen Hanna, singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, wrote on the wall of his room: «Kurt smells like Teen Spirit». With that phrase, Hanna was alluding to the Teen Spirit deodorant, which she and Tobi Vail—Cobain's girlfriend at the time—had come across during a visit to a supermarket. Cobain, for his part, claimed that he did not learn of the deodorant's existence until months after the single's release, and that he had interpreted the phrase as a revolutionary slogan, given that at the time they were talking about anarchism and punk rock. The recording took place in May 1991 at Sound City Studios, located in Van Nuys, California. The single included «Even in His Youth» and «Aneurysm» as B-sides, plus «Drain You» on the UK edition. The song's genre falls within grunge and alternative rock, and its duration is 4 minutes and 38 seconds. The lyrics are the exclusive work of Cobain, while the production of the track is credited to Nirvana.
