"Come as You Are" is a song by the grunge band Nirvana, included on their second studio album, Nevermind, released in 1991. This track was released as a single on March 3, 1992. Along with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", it was fundamental in introducing Nirvana and the grunge movement to the public in the early 1990s. Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Come as You Are" at number 445 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and in the 2010 edition, at number 452. In the United States, it was Nirvana's second and last single to reach the top 40, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in the United Kingdom, it reached ninth place in the top 10. In 1999, Kerrang magazine ranked it at number 49 on its list of the 100 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time. According to Business Insider, in April 2016, it was the sixth most streamed song of the 1990s on Spotify. Additionally, Nielsen Music's 2019 year-end report indicated that it was the third most played song of the decade on mainstream rock radio, with 134,000 spins. The song also appears in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. The title "Come as You Are" translates into Spanish as "Ven tal como eres" and is considered one of Nirvana's most optimistic songs. Unlike other darker lyrics from the band, this song invites the listener to feel welcome "as a friend". Although the main theme is acceptance, there is also a tone of distrust, especially in the line "When I swear that I don't have a gun", which is repeated several times. Following the death of Kurt Cobain in April 1994, special attention was paid to the phrase "When I swear that I don't have a gun". Although other songs on Nevermind that mention guns have been commented upon, this is considered to have been a coincidence, as the album was recorded three years before Cobain's death. The verses "Come dowsed in mud... soaked in bleach" reference both the band's debut album, Bleach, and a campaign in Seattle in the late 1980s that urged intravenous drug users to disinfect their needles to prevent disease. The song is believed to have been dedicated to Cobain's future daughter, Frances Bean. The music video for "Come as You Are" shows the band in a dark and gothic setting, with water falling over glass that makes it difficult to see their faces. It includes images of objects with no direct connection to the lyrics, such as a dog and fish, but focuses primarily on the band. Dividing cells, sperm and eggs, and a naked baby swimming after a dollar bill are also seen, similar to the cover of Nevermind. In the video, Cobain appears hanging from a chandelier with his guitar, which caused him dizziness and nausea due to the movement and his chronic illness, leaving him sick for several days. These scenes were not repeated, so what is seen in the video is a dizzy Kurt.
