The story behind

The song In Bloom, which you are now learning to play, has an interesting story behind its sound. Originally, it sounded very different, more like something by Bad Brains. It was Kurt Cobain who, after hearing it, took it home and worked on it until it took the form we know. He transformed it into something more melodic, closer to what would later be the sound of Nevermind. This version, the one we hear on the album, was recorded in May 1991 at Sound City Studios in California, with production by Butch Vig and the band itself.

This album version was not the first time In Bloom was recorded. Back in 1990, when the band was still with Sub Pop, a take was registered at Smart Studios, with Butch Vig also involved. From that session, where eight songs were recorded, a physical cut was made on the master tape to remove a part that Vig considered unnecessary. What remained from that session served as a demo that circulated and attracted the attention of major record labels. In fact, a version of In Bloom from that era was used for a music video that came out in 1991. The theme of In Bloom, as it is told, targets people outside the underground music scene who did not grasp the band's message. It is even said that part of the lyrics, such as "He is the one, who likes all our pretty songs, and he likes to sing along, and he likes to shoot his gun, but he doesn't know what it means," was directed at their manager. The song was released as the fourth and final single from Nevermind in November 1992, and despite not having a physical release in the United States, it received a lot of radio play, reaching number 5 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. Internationally, it also had a good reception, entering the Top 10 in Ireland and Portugal, and the Top 20 in Finland. The music video that accompanied this single, directed by Kevin Kerslake, won the award for Best Alternative Video at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards.
