The story behind

The first time I heard “Paranoia y soledad,” I was hooked by the opening guitar riff. It’s not a song that starts off gently or with an obvious melodic hook, but rather with a sharp bass and drum beat that sets the rhythm from the very first second. Serú Girán’s voice enters almost as a whisper, but with a tension that doesn’t let up for the next six minutes. There’s something about that mix of unease and groove that evokes those moments when music seems to breathe right where silence should be. The track isn’t purely instrumental: the lyrics unfold like a monologue that becomes increasingly tangled in itself, as if each verse were another step toward a place from which there is no return. Recorded during a pivotal moment for the band, this track emerged as Serú Girán moved away from the orchestral arrangements of their debut album and embraced a more direct sound. The album *La grasa de las capitales* was released in August 1979, and the song became one of the most memorable tracks on that record, which *Rolling Stone Argentina* ranked years later at number 17 on its list of the best Argentine rock albums. At six and a half minutes long, “Paranoia y soledad” does not set out to be a conventional commercial hit, but rather something that stands on its own merits: a track that sounds like a confession of restrained cries and that, in the end, leaves you with the feeling of having heard a complete story in a single journey.
