The story behind
San Francisco y el lobo, according to DoReSol
This song cuts like a knife: in just over two minutes, “San Francisco y el lobo” shifts from a frantic rhythm to a chorus that sticks in your memory. The bass and drums set a relentless pulse, while the guitar cuts through with sharp lines that seem to mimic the howls of the wolf in the title. There are no frills, no extended choruses, no long transitions: everything is there to keep the song from slipping away, as if time itself had been compressed so the message hits home directly.
They recorded it in the midst of a shift in sound: after the orchestral experience of their first album, Serú Girán chose to strip away everything superfluous. The idea was clear: for every note to ring out with the urgency of someone who doesn’t want to miss the moment. The result was presented live at the Auditorio Buenos Aires, where the band performed from September 6 to 16, 1979. By then, they had already left behind the grandiose arrangements and were committed to songs that breathed unfiltered. The album, *La grasa de las capitales*, eventually ranked 17th on Rolling Stone’s list of the best Argentine rock albums years later. But back then, what mattered was the immediate impact: an album that sounded like a fist pounding on the table.
