The story behind
The song *Los amantes del círculo polar* by La Oreja de Van Gogh is presented as an enigmatic closing track on their second album, *El viaje de Copperpot*. What makes it special is how it intertwines with the previous track, *Tantas cosas que contar*. The opening chords of this piece seem to continue the rhythm that the previous one leaves suspended, creating a sonic atmosphere that unites both songs almost imperceptibly. This technique of connecting tracks was not isolated; the group had already employed it on other albums, such as *A las cinco en el Astoria* or *Guapa*, demonstrating a particular way of conceiving the listening experience of their works as a whole.
The inspiration for *Los amantes del círculo polar* comes directly from cinema. The lyrics, written by Pablo Benegas, who also considers it his favorite film, pay homage to the 1998 film of the same name, directed by Julio Médem. Both works share a similar theme: the complexity of a romantic relationship that, despite having shared years together, fails to reach a happy ending. Despite its conceptual and sonic richness, this song did not receive wide promotion as a single from the album. The end of the piece is distinguished by the use of a Moog Multimoog synthesizer, manipulated by Xabi San Martín through filters and effects, adding a distinctive and enveloping sonic layer. The album *El viaje de Copperpot*, released in 2000, became the group's most successful, exploring a sound closer to power pop, although without completely abandoning the roots of Donosti Sound.
