The story behind
Long as I Can See the Light, according to DoReSol
When you dive into *Long as I Can See the Light*, you encounter a melody that invites introspection. The lyrics, written by John Fogerty, paint a picture of someone embarking on an uncertain path, but who maintains faith as long as they can "see the light." Fogerty himself explained that the song speaks of that solitary part of oneself, the desire to be understood, and the need for those at home to light a lamp so they can find their way back. The word "light" here has a double meaning: it can be a spiritual guide, as mentioned in Psalm 27, or the light of earthly love. The music, with its almost anthem-like feel, reinforces that sense of searching and hope.
This piece was released in 1970 as the B-side to the single *Lookin' Out My Back Door*, forming part of the album *Cosmo's Factory*. Despite being the less prominent companion on the initial release, *Long as I Can See the Light* proved its own worth, reaching number 20 in the UK and number one in Norway. Cash Box magazine described it as a more leisurely ballad, with blues influences, suggesting it could outperform its A-side. Billboard, on the other hand, rated it as a blues track with a funky touch. Over time, it became a staple in John Fogerty's solo concerts, and its drum beat was even sampled by Moby for his track *The Sky Is Broken* in 1999. In 2012, Fogerty recorded a new version with the band My Morning Jacket for his 2013 album, *Wrote a Song for Everyone*.
