The story behind
The Who released I Can't Explain in December 1964, as the band's first single. The song was released in the United Kingdom a month later, and from the beginning it became part of their characteristic sound. The structure is straightforward, with a repeating guitar riff and a voice that moves between shouted and sung parts. Pete Townshend wrote the lyrics in 18 and a half years, without much difficulty, as if it had come to him suddenly. The song was recorded in a London studio, and the sound has that energy of the early years of rock, with influences from bands like the Kinks. The version by the Scorpions was recorded in 1989, as part of a charity album, but the original remains the most well-known. People play it live almost always, as if it were a way of starting the night. ↓ Skip to chords
