The story behind

I Can't Explain, according to DoReSol

When Pete Townshend sat down to write I Can't Explain, he was barely 18 and a half years old. The creative spark arose in his room, while listening to artists like Bob Dylan and Charles Mingus. The main idea that resonated with him was the difficulty of expressing deep feelings, a sensation that was summarized in the title. This approach, almost like a reflection on the act of composing itself, became the first part of the lyrics. Then, upon meeting producer Shel Talmy, Townshend set out to create a love song that recalled the sound of The Kinks, specifically You Really Got Me, in the hope of impressing Talmy. The song was recorded in November 1964 at Pye Studios in London.

This single marked a turning point for the band, as it was the first released under the name The Who. Previously, they had released material as The High Numbers. I Can't Explain went on sale in the United States on December 19, 1964, through Decca, and in the United Kingdom on January 15, 1965, with Brunswick. The band has kept this song as a staple in their concerts, often opening their performances. It is said that Jimmy Page, who would later form Led Zeppelin, participated as a session guitarist on the recording, playing rhythm guitar. However, there are different accounts of his contribution, with some indicating that his part did not make the final cut, while others, including Roger Daltrey, claim that Page played lead guitar and even the solo. The influence of The Kinks is palpable, and Daltrey has commented that, while it wasn't a direct copy, the music of The Kinks was a great inspiration to Pete Townshend at the time.
