The story behind

The song En la ciudad de la furia, born from the mind of Gustavo Cerati, immerses us in a particular urban atmosphere. The lyrics paint a picture of Buenos Aires, which it refers to as the "city of fury." The narrative is presented from the perspective of a winged, almost mythical being, who moves through the city only when night falls, seeking refuge before people wake up. This anonymous narrator suggests that only the woman he addresses can see him and know of his existence, even though he feels part of everyone. It's as if he embodies the very spirit of the metropolis: bold, elusive, and perhaps with a hint of fear, similar to that of its inhabitants, whose faces reflect that latent fury and their destiny in the city. The chorus, on the other hand, leads us to a feeling of hope and longing, with a melancholic melody. The narrator anticipates the woman's welcome, an embrace that will protect him until dawn, helping him to fade into the mist before the city comes back to life. Musically, the piece leans towards an alternative and gothic rock sound, with touches of new wave, marking an evolution in Soda Stereo's style compared to their previous works.

This piece, released in 1989 as the first single from their album Doble Vida, has its roots in a musical idea that Gustavo Cerati conceived at the age of fourteen. The recording took place in June 1988, and the album was released in July of the same year. The production was handled by Carlos Alomar. The music video, directed by Alfredo Lois and filmed in black and white in Buenos Aires, was a finalist in the Best International Video category at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. The video explores the figure of an ordinary man dealing with the conflicts of urban life, metaphorically represented as being trapped in a cage. In the end, it is revealed that this man is Cerati, and then the entire band appears, also within the same structure. The song became a staple of their live performances, being chosen to open Soda Stereo's last concert on September 20, 1997. A notably different version, with a style closer to blues and accentuated musical complexity, was performed in 1996 at MTV studios in Miami, featuring the participation of Colombian singer Andrea Echeverri. In the 2007 reunion tour, Gira Me Verás Volver, the song was a recurring theme in all concerts. Additionally, there is a remix titled En la Ciudad de la Furia [Dance Mix] included in the album Zona de Promesas.
