¿Dónde están los ladrones?

The story behind Where Are the Thieves? is as peculiar as the song itself. It all began with a mishap on a trip to Bogotá, Colombia, where Shakira's luggage was stolen. What was most frustrating for her was that inside those suitcases were the compositions she was developing for her next album. Faced with the loss, and with a feeling of discouragement, Shakira decided to reinvent the project, giving rise to new ideas and, among them, this piece. The anecdote inspired the title, and in an interview in 1999, she herself explained that she dedicated it to those men who, in her view, are the biggest thieves when they win hearts only to leave. In the song's performance, Shakira adds her personal touch by playing harmonica notes.

This composition, which is part of the 1998 self-titled album, was also heard in live performances, such as the one she gave in Rotterdam, Netherlands, during her Mongoose Tour. There, the lyrics acquired a metaphorical dimension, expanding the idea of theft beyond the personal, to encompass "white-collar" figures and those who strip more massively, comparing the situation to a "burning Rome." The music, with a duration of 3 minutes and 15 seconds, was produced by Luis Fernando Ochoa and Shakira herself, with recording engineering handled by several professionals such as Marcelo Acevedo and Joel Numa, and mixing done by Sebastián Krys. The album, released on September 29, 1998, fused Latin pop with influences from Spanish rock and Middle Eastern music, consolidating Shakira's path after the success of her debut.
