The story behind

Bück dich, according to DoReSol

The song “Bück dich,” which translates as “Bow Down” or “Crouch Down,” contains a direct command in its title: “Crouch Down!”—which in German is phrased as “Bend yourself.” This phrase, which alludes to sodomy in its lyrics, is at the heart of one of Rammstein’s most talked-about live performances. During their concerts, vocalist Till Lindemann and keyboardist Christian “Flake” Lorenz reenact a provocative scene in which Lindemann simulates an act of sodomy with Lorenz using a dildo that occasionally squirts liquids such as custard, liquor, or water. This performance sparked controversy and led to Lindemann and Lorenz being arrested on June 5, 1999, in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the United States. After spending the night in jail, each was fined $200. This type of performance is a hallmark of the band, known for its theatrical audacity and its ability to spark debate.

“Bück dich” is part of *Sehnsucht*, the second studio album by the German band Rammstein, which was released in Germany on August 22, 1997, and worldwide on August 25 of that same year, under the Motor Music Records label. The album was a notable success in Europe, reaching number one in Germany. The visual concept behind *Sehnsucht* is also unique: its cover, designed by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, unfolds to reveal photographs of the band members’ faces, distorted by what appear to be instruments of torture. In reality, these are original surgical instruments that belonged to Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a renowned surgeon. The song is 3:23 long. For the production of “Bück dich” and the album, Rammstein collaborated with producers Bobo and Jacob Hellner, while Ronald Prent handled the mixing. The band, formed in Berlin in 1994 with its original lineup of Till Lindemann, Richard Z. Kruspe, Paul H. Landers, Oliver “Ollie” Riedel, Christoph “Doom” Schneider, and Christian “Flake” Lorenz, is a leading figure in the Neue Deutsche Härte movement, a style that combines industrial metal with elements of electronic dance music, and their live shows are famous for their pyrotechnics and theatricality.
