Big City Nights

When you listen to Big City Nights, you encounter an energy that invites you to move. The song, written by Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker, was born from a very specific image: Schenker, after a party in Tokyo in 1982, saw the sunrise over the city from his window. That postcard inspired him to imagine urban nightlife, and the lyrics created by Meine capture that feeling. The idea was for it to sound good on the radio, with the audience in the United States in mind, and it was released as a hard rock, heavy metal, and arena rock track. Despite being released in 1984 as part of the album Love at First Sting, its chart performance wasn't overwhelming, but it became a staple in their live performances.

The recording of Big City Nights took place at Dierks Studios in Germany, with Dieter Dierks as producer and arranger. For the album Love at First Sting, which was released in February 1984 in the United States and March 1984 in the United Kingdom, the band worked with engineers like David Hewitt and Gerd Rautenbach. Interestingly, on this track, the guitar solo is performed by Rudolf Schenker, something that also happens on other songs on the album. The single was released on August 20, 1984, with Bad Boys Running Wild on the B-side. The music video, filmed in 1985, was directed by Hart Perry and Marty Callner, and was associated with the release of the live album World Wide Live. Over the years, Big City Nights has been part of major tours such as the Love at First Sting Tour (1984-1986) and the Crazy World Tour (1990-1991), and has been reinvented in symphonic versions for Moment of Glory (2000) and acoustic versions for MTV Unplugged - Live in Athens (2013). It was also re-recorded for the compilation album Comeblack in 2011.
