The story behind

Bemsha Swing, according to DoReSol

Bemsha Swing is one of those pieces that sounds like Monk from the first measure: a theme that sways between playfulness and hypnotism, with a rhythm that seems to escape the grid but, in the end, always returns home. What stands out most is its melodic structure, which moves in a sway where the accents don’t fall where one expects, as if the piano were telling a joke with unexpected pauses. It’s not a piece that can be played by memory: one must feel the weight of each note for that *swing* to work without losing its freshness. He recorded it in two sessions in October and December 1956, with two different quintets, in a borrowed studio where the sound bounced off untreated walls.

The final version of Bemsha Swing —just 3 minutes and 11 seconds long— emerged in that homely atmosphere, where the musicians improvised until something clicked. Monk wasn’t seeking perfection: he wanted each repetition to sound like the first time, with that blend of rigor and freedom that defines his music. The album, Brilliant Corners, was released the following year and became his first record with Riverside Records, where his own compositions predominated.
