The story behind
Ay, qué pesado, according to DoReSol
The song Ay, qué pesado, with its duration of 3 minutes and 59 seconds, is part of a key moment in Mecano's career. This track is found on the album Entre el cielo y el suelo, released in 1986. After a change of record label, this work marked a turning point, ushering in an era where the band explored greater maturity in both their creative proposal and the technical quality of their productions. It was the first album with which Mecano consolidated its international projection, selling over a million copies in Spain alone.
This album, Entre el cielo y el suelo, also highlighted the compositional facet of José María Cano, who assumed a more prominent role in songwriting, in contrast to the previous stage where his brother Nacho was the main creator of the singles. The album title, in fact, comes from the first verse of one of the included songs, Me cuesta tanto olvidarte. The production of this work was handled by Mecano, while the mixing was done by Spencer Henderson and Austin Ince. The band, formed by Ana Torroja and brothers Nacho and José María Cano, relied on support musicians for their recordings and live performances such as Arturo Terriza, Manolo Aguilar, Nacho Mañó, Javier Quílez, Ángel Celada, and Óscar Astruga. Mecano's sound evolved from the techno-pop of their beginnings to an eclecticism that demonstrated great versatility, always maintaining cohesion through the characteristic pop of Ana Torroja. Their reach extended beyond Spain, reaching Latin America, the United States, the Philippines, and with some impact in countries like Japan, Sweden, Germany, and other markets.
