The story behind
When you dive into Ángel, you encounter a piece that, despite its apparent simplicity, encapsulates a crucial moment for Mecano. The song, with a duration of 4 minutes and 36 seconds, is taken from the album Entre el cielo y el suelo, released in 1986. This work marked a turning point for the band, representing a stage of greater maturity both creatively and technically, which opened the doors to broader international recognition. It was with this album that Mecano managed to overcome the barrier of one million copies sold in Spain alone, after their change of record label.
The album Entre el cielo y el suelo also stands out because José María Cano consolidated his role as the main composer, in contrast to the previous stage where his brother Nacho was the author of most of the singles. The album title, in fact, comes from the first verse of one of the included songs, Me cuesta tanto olvidarte. The production of this work was handled by Mecano themselves, with mixing done by Spencer Henderson and Austin Ince. The group, formed by Ana Torroja and brothers Nacho and José María Cano, had been active from 1981 to 1992, with a brief reunion in 1998. Throughout their career, they incorporated session musicians such as Arturo Terriza, Manolo Aguilar, Nacho Mañó, Javier Quílez, Ángel Celada, and Óscar Astruga. Mecano's music evolved from an initial techno sound towards a more eclectic style, always maintaining a unifying pop base. Their reach transcended Spain, extending to Latin America, the United States, the Philippines, and with some impact in places like Japan, Sweden, and Germany.
