Zucchero

Adelmo Fornaciari, known in the music world as Zucchero, has built a remarkable career by blending the warmth of Mediterranean melodies with the deep roots of blues, gospel, and soul. His sound, which draws directly from the traditions of the southern United States, has allowed him to connect with global audiences over more than forty years. This unique stylistic mix has not only earned him considerable commercial success, with over 50 million records sold, but has also opened the door to collaborations with an impressive array of international artists. Names like Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Miles Davis, B.B. King, Sting, and Andrea Bocelli are just a few of those who have shared projects with him, expanding his reach far beyond Italian borders.

His musical journey took a turning point in 1985, when he decided to shift his style toward more international sounds. This change materialized in an album recorded with the Randy Jackson Band. From this work came the single Donne, which, despite initial criticism, became a major hit. This period also saw him participate in the Sanremo Festival, a stage he already knew well. In fact, his first appearance at the festival was in 1982 with Una notte che vola via, and he returned in 1983 with Nuvola, in addition to composing for other artists such as Volevo dirti for Donatella Milani.

More about Zucchero

Biography

Zucchero's life before establishing himself in music was marked by diverse experiences. Born in Reggio Emilia, his childhood was spent between Roncocesi and Forte dei Marmi, before moving to Avenza, near Carrara, where he completed his training as an electronics technician. Despite passing 39 of the 51 exams in his veterinary degree, his true calling led him to abandon his studies to fully dedicate himself to music. During his formative years, he worked in various trades, such as a lathe operator, a cured meat maker, and a baker. His stage name, "Zucchero" ("Sugar"), comes from a nickname given to him by his primary school teacher. His passion for football was also notable, even being signed as a goalkeeper for the youth teams of Reggiana. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with awards such as the Tenco Prize for lifetime achievement, two World Music Awards, and six IFPI Platinum Europe Awards. His album Oro incenso & birra stands out as one of the best-selling in the history of Italian light music. Additionally, his performance at the Kremlin made him the first Western artist to appear there after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and in 1996, he was included in The Faber Companion to 20th Century Popular Music, a reference encyclopedia of modern music.
