More about Underworld
Biography
The moment Underworld stopped being a cult band was with Second Toughest in the Infants in 1996. The album arrived just as Trainspotting was sweeping the theaters, and suddenly their music was everywhere. The song "Born Slippy NUXX" —originally a throwaway B-side— became an unintentional anthem: a bass loop that seems eternal, drums that pound like a racing heart, and a chorus that repeats until it becomes hypnotic. It sold over a million copies, but the most interesting part is how the band made something so raw sound accessible without losing its essence. Then came Beaucoup Fish in 1999, an album whose title comes from a Louisiana fisherman’s sample and that smells of controlled chaos: Hyde and Smith worked separately, sending mixes by mail, and the result was an album full of textures that flow like a churning river. Among the three records that defined their decade —dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest in the Infants, and Beaucoup Fish— they made it clear that their genius lay in turning disorder into something that sounds inevitable.
