Toto Cutugno

Salvatore Cutugno, known as Toto Cutugno, left a significant mark on Italian music, not only as a performer but also as a prolific songwriter. His sound, often rooted in catchy melodies and a direct vocal style, connected with broad audiences. Before shining solo, he was part of several groups. In the first half of the sixties, he experimented with Toto & i Rockers, and then joined Ghigo e i goghi as a drummer. Later, in 1965, he founded Toto e i Tati, with whom he recorded several singles and participated in the festival *Un disco per l'estate* in 1970 with the song *Questo fragile amore*. It was with the band Albatros, where he began to sing in addition to playing, that he took an important step. With them, in 1976, he reached third place in the Sanremo Festival with *Volo AZ504*, a song that also resonated abroad, being covered in France by Gérard Lenorman.

Toto Cutugno's solo career definitively took off in 1980 by winning the Sanremo Festival with *Solo noi*. From then on, he became a recurring figure in the competition, accumulating a record number of participations. He not only triumphed as a performer but also demonstrated his skill as a songwriter for others. A notable example is his work for Adriano Celentano, for whom he composed successful songs in the seventies and eighties, including the track *Soli* which topped the sales charts for months. His talent as a composer even extended to international artists, such as Luis Miguel, for whom he wrote *Noi ragazzi di oggi* in 1985, achieving a second place at Sanremo as an author.
