Umberto Tozzi

From his beginnings, Umberto Tozzi has stood out for a sound that connects directly with the public, achieving notable commercial impact. It is estimated that he has sold around 70 to 80 million records worldwide, positioning him as one of the Italian artists with the greatest reach. His ability to create catchy melodies and direct lyrics has led him to compose songs that transcend borders, such as Gloria, which achieved great international repercussion, and Ti amo and Tu, songs that became hits.

His musical career began in his youth in Turin, where he learned to play the guitar. In 1968, at the age of 16, he joined the band Off Sound. Subsequently, he became part of the Patrick Samson Set, a group that led him to work as a session musician for the Numero Uno record label until 1974. During this period, he had the opportunity to collaborate with various artists and participate in the recording of albums for figures like Adriano Pappalardo. In 1974, he co-wrote the song Un corpo e un'anima, which was performed by Wess and Dori Ghezzi and won the "Canzonissima" contest that same year. He was also part of the trio Data, which released a single album, Strada bianca, with very few copies printed.

Biography

The collaboration with lyricist and producer Giancarlo Bigazzi marked a turning point in his career, leading to a series of hits. His solo debut came in 1976 with the album Donna amante mia. Massive recognition was consolidated in 1977 with Ti amo, a song that topped the sales charts for months and set records. It was followed by Tu in 1978 and Gloria in 1979, songs that became known globally and were even adapted into English by Laura Branigan, who achieved great success in the United States with Gloria. The 80s continued with albums like Tozzi (1980), which included the single Stella stai, and Notte rosa (1981), considered an innovative work. In 1987, along with Gianni Morandi and Enrico Ruggeri, he won the Sanremo Festival with Si può dare di più. After a period of hiatus, he returned in 1994 with the album Equivocando, which established him as a singer-songwriter by writing both the music and lyrics for his songs.
