Roupa Nova

Roupa Nova is not just a band: it is a sound that seeps into the memory of Brazil. Their trademark is the intertwined voices, that polished pop rock where vocal harmonies feel like a sonic embrace. It is neither raw rock nor syrupy ballads; it is something closer to the AOR of 80s radio, with clean guitars and keyboards that shine without drawing too much attention. That balance between sophistication and accessibility made them sound unlike anything else in the country at the time, and although critics sometimes looked at them with skepticism, the public had no doubt about bringing them into their homes. They took the leap when they changed their name and direction.

Before becoming Roupa Nova, the group had been playing at parties in Rio de Janeiro as Os Famks, a sextet that covered international hits under the alias Os Motokas. But in 1980, with a contract at Polygram, they decided to reinvent themselves. The turning point came when they recorded Roupa Nova, a song by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant that gave its title to their first album and to the band itself. That was the birth of the sound that would define them: catchy melodies, lyrics that slipped into soap operas, and instrumental skill that turned them into sought-after session musicians for artists like Gal Costa or Zizi Possi.

More about Roupa Nova

Biography

They even left their mark on iconic themes such as Tema da Vitória, which accompanied Formula 1 broadcasts with Ayrton Senna at the wheel. The 80s were their golden age. Albums like Roupa Nova (1985) and Herança (1987) sold over a million copies each, and songs like Dona —from Roque Santeiro— or Whisky A-Go-Go became national anthems. But beyond the numbers, what stands out is their ability to reinvent themselves without losing their essence. In 2004, Roupacústico proved they could strip away the lush arrangements and still sound just as convincing with just voice, guitar, and drums. The leap to Abbey Road Studios in 2009, with Roupa Nova em Londres, earned them a Latin Grammy and proved their formula was still relevant.

Today, with over four decades without changes to their original lineup —until the unexpected passing of Paulinho in 2020— their legacy is not just musical, but also a testament to consistency.
