Player

Player is a rock band that was born in Los Angeles in 1976. The lead bassist, Ronn Moss, already had experience playing before, mainly in the style rock'n'roll. From a young age he learned drums, then guitar and bass, and got involved in many places around the city, even before he was of legal age to play. With him came three musicians: Peter Beckett, from Liverpool; JC Crowley, who played keyboards and guitar; and John Friesen, drummer. Together they formed Player.

Their first album, also called Player, came out in 1977. It was recorded in 1976 and released by RSO and Philips. The album has a lot of good music, but the track that stood out the most was «Baby Come Back». That single became the best-selling in the United States in 1977, selling over 600,000 copies. That's why they received the gold certification from RIAA and CRIA. The song was written by Peter and JC, and had a lot of impact.

Biography

In 1978, the magazine Billboard named them as «New Artist or Group of the Year». Nineteen years later, in 2007, they were inducted into the «Rock and Roll Hall of Fame». Peter Beckett came to the United States in 1974 to join Skyband, but the band disbanded. Later he met JC Crowley in Hollywood, at a white dress party. Both were wearing jeans and T-shirts, which was unusual. They became friends and started recording songs in JC's garage. They called themselves Riff Raff, but later changed the name to «Bandana». They recorded a single called «Jukebox Saturday Night».

Ronn Moss joined the band after meeting Paul Palmer, who introduced them. Although at first there were only three, John Friesen, the drummer who had been in high school bands with Ronn, joined later. Their sound was based on a soft pop rock style, with keyboards and harmonies. That style fit well with the music of Los Angeles.
