The story behind

Baby Come Back, according to DoReSol

When Peter Beckett and J. C. Crowley, founders of Player, encountered the end of romantic relationships, the spark to compose Baby Come Back was born. Beckett, as related by Patricia, the person in charge of their website, wrote the song from the heart after a five-year breakup, feeling relief after having no contact with his ex-partner. This piece, released in late 1977, became the lead single from the band's self-titled debut album, Player, and marked their big leap to fame.

The recording of Baby Come Back took place in 1977, with Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter producing, and Matt Hyde, Jay Lewis, and Joe Sidore as engineers. The track, classified within the soft rock and blue-eyed soul genres, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks in early 1978, remaining on the charts for a total of 32 weeks. In the United Kingdom, it reached number 32. The song was released under labels such as RSO Records and Philips Records. In 2018, the Australian band Ocean Alley performed a cover for the Like a Version segment of Triple J radio, which reached number 16 on that year's Hottest 100 chart and was certified gold. Additionally, Baby Come Back has been performed by Lisa Stansfield and was included on Keith Urban's album Flow State in 2026.
